Être and avoir are arguably the two most important verbs in the French language. Their conjugations are all mostly irregular, so it is necessary to memorize them. There are also several very useful and common expressions that use être and avoir. These expressions are covered further down in this lesson.
One important note about the verb étre is that, when speaking of professions, the indefinite article should be omitted. See the example sentences below.

Expressions with the verb “être”

Pierre et Sébastien sont de la France. Pierre and Sebastien are from France.
Je suis ingénieur. I am an engineer.
Ils sont dentistes. They are dentists.

Expressions with the verb “avoir”
Many common expressions are formed with avoir. For a lot of these expressions, “avoir” will translate as “to be” instead of “to have”.
